–IR Verbs

Most Spanish words that end in IR are verbs.

All verbs have two parts to them:
an ending

Every verb has 2 parts:

There are 3 types of verb categories:
AR, ER & IR
The IR tells us which endings to use.

When you remove the ending,
the part that remains is called the stem.

The stem tells the action
  •      vivir viv = eat
  • escribir escrib = drink
  •     abrir abr = read

The ending o means I
  •         vivo = I am living               escribo = I am writing
  •      recibo = I am receiving
  •         abro = I am opening

The ending es means you (tú)
  •          vives = you are living
  •     escribes = you are writing
  •      recibes = you are receiving
  •         abres = you are opening

The ending e means he, she, it,
and the formal you (usted)
  •  vive =    he is living
  •         she is living
  •       you (formal) are living
  •       it is living


  • escribe =    he is writing
  •       she is writing
  •                  you (formal) are writing
  •                            it is writing

  •      vivimos = we are living
  • escribimos = we are writing
  •  recibimos = we are receiving
  •    abrimos = we are opening

you (vosotros)
  •      vivís = you (vosotros) are living
  • escribís   = you (vosotros) are writing
  •  recibís = you (vosotros) are receiving
  •     abrís = you (vosotros) are opening
